Equine

Equine Tests (226)

An accession fee of $8.00 is applied to each accession/case, not each specimen. An accession is defined as samples from the same animal / herd / flock, originating from a single animal owner, submitted for the same condition, collected at the same time. This allows clients to receive bulk testing of same species (from the same owner) under one accession. Poultry submissions requesting multiples tests (e.g., AI, Mg/Ms, culture, etc.) for a single flock are counted as one accession.

Turnaround times are estimates in business days and apply to individual tests. Actual reporting of test results depends on the full battery of tests requested, day of the week/time of day samples arrive at the testing laboratory, and the quantity/quality of samples submitted. Information on additional services and fees can be found here.

The tests and fee schedules are provided for use by TVMDL clients, including veterinarians and animal owners. Fees charged to animal owners by veterinarians may exceed test prices shown herein, reflecting the time, expertise, and expense necessary to collect the sample, ship it in an appropriate manner, interpret results, and provide treatment advice.

Trace Mineral Panel (ICP/MS)

Measurement of trace minerals by inductively-coupled plasma/mass spectrometry.  Targets include copper, cobalt, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc.  A $10.75 sample preparation fee will be added to tissue and feed specimens.

Specimen:

One or more of the following*:

  • both 0.5 mL EDTA whole blood and 1 mL serum (both sample types are required)

  • 500 g feed

For birds, 0.6 mL EDTA or heparinized whole blood is adequate.

*Serum selenium provides current day levels, while whole blood selenium indicates selenium status over a longer period of time. TVMDL can interpret both serum and whole blood selenium concentrations for cattle, horses, sheep, birds or white-tailed deer. For goats, TVMDL has reference values for serum or plasma only.

Blood, serum, and urine samples are tested on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with a turnaround time of 5 days. Tissue and feed samples are tested on Mondays and Thursdays with a turnaround time of 7 days.
