Anticoagulant Rodenticides (LC/MS)

Measurement of anticoagulant rodenticides by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Targets include warfarin, bromadiolone, brodifacoum, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, coumatetralyl, difenacoum, and difethialone.

Specimen

One or more of the following: 

  • 2 mL EDTA whole blood
  • 2 mL heparinized whole blood
  • 2 mL serum
  • 10 g fresh liver
  • 10 g bait
Sampling Requirements

Do not submit liver in formalin. 

Do not centrifuge whole blood samples. 

Serum should be centrifuged and removed from the clot.

Collection Container

Tissue or bait: sealed, leak-proof plastic container or bag. Blood: EDTA (purple top) or heparinized (green top) tube. 

Serum: remove from red cells and place sample in an additive free transport tube.

Packing Instructions

Label all samples. Ship overnight on cold packs.

Special Instructions

Blood and serum samples are tested on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Liver samples are tested on Mondays and Thursdays. 

Bait may take up to 7 business days due to the extra processing required to remove waxes present in the sample prior to testing.
