Malignant Catarrhal Fever (rtPCR)

Description

Detection of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) by real-time PCR. This test can distinguish between the ovine, ibex, white tail deer, caprine and alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 strains of MCF.

Specimen

1 g fresh tissue (lymph node, liver, spleen, kidney, lung) and/or 1-2 mL EDTA whole blood.

Sampling Requirements

Blood in heparin (green top) tube cannot be used for this test. Ensure thorough mixing of blood in EDTA (e.g. invert tube several times immediately following collection) to prevent clotting. Clotted blood is not suitable for testing. Fresh samples provide the most accurate results.

Collection Container

Tissue: sealed, leak-proof plastic bag or container. 

Blood: EDTA (purple top) tube.

Packing Instructions

Label all samples. Ship overnight on cold packs in an insulated container.

This is a test for a disease agent regulated by the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) and/or the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS). Samples, documentation, and testing may be subject to additional requirements or restrictions as determined by TAHC or USDA APHIS.
