One of the following: 

  • 1 g or 1 mL fresh feces
  • 0.5 cm x 0.5 cm fresh intestinal necropsy tissue
  • fecal swab  

Nasal swabs and lung tissue are not acceptable for equine testing. 

Sampling Requirements

 If firm stool is not available, allow swab to absorb liquid feces or roll the swab in fecal material and cover cotton swab.

Collection Container

Swab: sterile, sealed vials with several drops of saline added to prevent desiccation. 

Feces or tissue: leak-proof, sterile container. 

Bacterial transport media are not appropriate for PCR assays. Dacron and synthetic swabs are preferred for PCR based assays.  Calcium alginate swabs are not acceptable.

Packing Instructions

Label all samples. Ship overnight on cold packs. 

Special Instructions

This test is performed at the Cornell University Animal Health Diagnostic Center in Ithaca, NY. Prices listed for tests performed outside TVMDL may not include referral lab accession fees and are subject to change without notice. A processing and forwarding fee is added to all referral tests. Turnaround times vary depending on shipping time and the referral lab's schedule.
