Swabs

Sampling Requirements

One collection site per swab and one swab per vial of transport medium. Sample should be aseptically collected.

Packing Instructions

Label all samples. Ship on cold packs. Samples must be received within 48 hours of collection.

Special Instructions

Pricing is per swab/site. 

Per the USDA, samples must meet the following requirements:

  1. clitoral sinus on a small diameter swab (rayon recommended)
  2. cervical/endometrial samples collected with a guarded uterine swab, not a capped standard amies swab
  3. dissolved swabs will not be tested
  4. samples must arrive cold on cold packs

Submit with the Contagious Equine Metritis submission form from the TVMDL website. Include the following on the form:

  1. name, address, phone number of submitting vet
  2. submitter signature
  3. name of the owner or a responsible person
  4. location including county of the animal sampled
  5. unique animal identification
  6. date of sample collection
  7. anatomical sites of sample collection

Required information on swabs:

  1. animal ID
  2. collection site
  3. date and time of collection 

If these conditions are not met, samples are required to be rejected as per USDA regulations.This is a test for a disease agent regulated by the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) and/or the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS). Samples, documentation, and testing may be subject to additional requirements or restrictions as determined by TAHC or USDA APHIS.
