Drug Screen – Equine Pre-Purchase (LC/MS)

Detection of NSAIDs, tranquilizers, and muscle relaxants by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. 

NSAID targets: acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, carprofen, celcoxib, deracoxib, diclofenac, diflunisal, eltenac, ethacrynic acid, etodolac, fenbufen, fenoprofen, firocoxib, flufenamic acid, flunixin, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, indomethacin, indoprofen, ketoprofen, ketorolac, meclofenamic acid, mefanamic acid, meloxicam, nabumetone, naproxen, oxyphenbutazone, phenylbutazone, piroxicam, salicylic acid, tenoxicam, tolfenamic acid, and tolmetin. 

Tranquilizer targets: trazodone, acepromazine, fluphenazine, fluoxetine, guanabenz, reserpine, romifidine, xylazine, and detomidine. 

Muscle relaxant targets: methocarbamol. 

One of the following: 

• 5 mL serum
• 5 mL plasma
• 10 mL urine

Remove serum or plasma from clot and place in an additive free transport tube. 

Glass or plastic tube with no anticoagulant additives.

Label all samples. Ship overnight on cold packs.

The testing schedule reflects days that extractions are initiated. Samples must be received in the testing section by 3:30 pm the day prior to the scheduled test day, otherwise samples will be held until the next scheduled test day. Turnaround time represents the estimated number of business days needed for complete extraction, sample preparation, instrument analysis, quality review, and data interpretation. 
 
Samples deemed suspicious from initial screening will be subject to confirmatory testing. This may add an additional 1-3 days to the listed turnaround time, depending on the availability of reference standards through approved vendors and the complexity of required analytical and extraction methods.
 
Quantitation of a positive sample can be performed for an additional fee and may extend turnaround times.
