PT Test Decision Tree
PT Test Decision Tree
Texans own birds for a variety of purposes. Those who intend on selling or showing their birds, may need a Pullorum-Typhoid (PT) test. Take this short questionnaire to determine if you need to test your flock for PT.
Do you own poultry?
According to the National Poultry Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), poultry is defined as domesticated fowl, including chickens, turkeys, ostriches, emus, rheas, cassowaries, waterfowl, and game birds, except doves and pigeons, which are bred for the primary purpose of producing eggs or meat.
Yes
No
Non-poultry birds are not required to be tested for PT. Contact the Texas Animal Health Commission for rules and regulations regarding non-poultry birds.
Do you show or intend to show your poultry?
Yes
No
You will need to have your flock tested for PT. If you intend on showing your birds outside the state, it’s encouraged you become a of member of the National Poultry Improvement Program (NPIP) in addition to having a certified PT clean flock.
Do you sell or intend to sell meat or eggs for consumption?
Yes
No
Contact your local health department for the rules and regulations regarding the sale of meat and eggs for consumption.
Do you sell or intend to sell breeding stock, hatching eggs, chicks, and/or birds of any age?
Yes
No
Flocks not for sell or show do not require a PT test.
Do you sell or intend to sell publicly?
Yes
No
Flock owners who do not intend on selling their birds or bird products publicly are not required to have their flocks tested for PT. However, it is
strongly
encouraged from an animal health perspective.
Flock owners selling their birds and/or bird products in the state of Texas are required to have their flocks tested for PT and join the Texas Animal Health Commission’s Domestic and Exotic Fowl Registration Program. Membership in the National Poultry Improvement Program (NPIP) is encouraged for those who sell out of state, but not required. Those who sell out of state will still be required to have their flocks tested for PT.
Following the completion of this questionnaire, if you still have questions regarding the need to have your flock tested for PT, contact the Texas PT Program Office at 979.845.3414 or pt-program@tvmdl.tamu.edu.
