The Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, TVMDL, has added to and improved it’s diagnostic offerings for equine and canine clients interested in testing for respiratory diseases.
Clients now have the options of requesting two new testing panels aimed at detecting common pathogens that contribute to equine respiratory disease.
Respiratory PCR Panel – Equine Basic

Turnaround: This test is performed at the College Station laboratory Monday through Friday with results in 1-4 business days.
Price: $120
The basic panel includes the following respiratory pathogens:
- Influenza A Virus
- Streptococcus equi subsp. equi (Strangles – SEE)
- Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (SEZ)
- Equine Herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1)
- Equine Herpesvirus 4 (EHV-4)
- Equine Rhinitis A Virus (ERAV)
- Equine Rhinitis B Virus (ERVB)
Equine Herpesvirus 2 and Equine Herpesvirus 5 can be added for an additional cost of $30.

For broader diagnostic coverage, the comprehensive panel includes all targets from the basic panel, plus:
- Equine Herpesvirus 2 (EHV-2)
- Equine Herpesvirus 5 (EHV-5)
In addition to the new equine panels, TVMDL has also updated the canine respiratory panel to include targets for Mycoplasma cynos and Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus. These additions expand the panel’s diagnostic capabilities, enabling more comprehensive detection of pathogens associated with canine infectious respiratory disease complex to support faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment.

- Canine adenovirus 2
- Canine distemper virus
- Canine herpesvirus 1
