Initial training for new testers
All individuals interested in becoming an Authorized Tester are required to attend certification training. Trainings are scheduled throughout the year based on interest and the need for more testers.
The waitlist for 2025 trainings has now closed. All individuals interested in joining the 2026 waitlist should continue to monitor this page for updates. Once open, those on the 2026 waitlist will be emailed registration information as trainings are scheduled.

Renewal training for current testers
All Authorized Testers are required to renew their certification every three years. Current Authorized Testers should contact the PT Office at pt-program@tvmdl.tamu.edu regarding renewal training.
Authorized Tester Training Frequently Asked Questions
What are the requirements to become an Authorized Tester?
All Authorized Testers must be at least 18 years old. There are no other requirements to become an Authorized Tester should interested individuals attend the required pre-training webinar and certification training.
When is the next training?
Trainings are scheduled throughout the year based on interest and the need for more testers. As such, opportunities to attend a training will vary. Those interested in becoming an Authorized Tester are strongly encouraged to attend training when they are offered.
How much does it cost to attend training?
Trainings are held in-person and are offered at a nominal fee. The registration fee, along with other details regarding training, are announced closer to each training date.
What is included in each training’s registration cost?
The registration fee covers printed course materials, in-person instruction, and lunch.
How much does it cost to become an Authorized Tester?
In addition to the cost of attending a training, individuals should expect to spend around $300 to purchase the necessary supplies needed to perform testing. This supplies are purchased at the discretion of each Authorized Tester.
Do I need PT testing supplies in order to attend training?
No. The PT Programs strongly suggests individuals wait to purchase supplies until they receive notice of passing their training.
What is included in training?
Each training consists of a lecture, positive/negative sample identification, and two written tests covering information presented. Individuals will also receive hands-on instruction for handling birds for blood draws.
How long does training last?
Individuals should expect training to last most of the day to ensure all information is adequately covered.
Can a guest attend a training with me?
All training participants must be registered to attend. This includes spouses and other family members or friends. There will not be an option to register onsite. Due to the supplies needed to conduct these trainings and the size of the venue, only individuals who are currently registered will be allowed inside the building. There will be no refunds for those who cannot attend.
Once I become an Authorized Tester, can I test outside my county?
Yes. As an Authorized Tester, you can test anywhere in Texas. Many Authorized Testers travel outside their county to perform testing, however, this is not required. Each Authorized Tester should determine the distance they are willing to travel, if any.
Can I test my own birds?
Yes. Authorized Testers are not required to test other people’s birds and may only test their own flock.
Can I attend training in another state or by an entity other than the PT Office?
No. The Texas PT Office is the only entity authorized to offer training in Texas. Out of state testing certifications are not valid in Texas. Those trained in other states must be retrained in Texas.
