Specimen

AIV: One or more of the following:

  • tracheal swab
  • oropharyngeal swab
  • cloacal swab
  • 1-2 mL tracheal wash
  • 1 g fresh trachea

MG/MS: 1 g fresh respiratory tissue and/or tracheal or choanal cleft (oral) swab.

Sampling Requirements

AIV: Swabs must be removed from media. Swirl each swab in the liquid, press the tip of the swab on the side of the tube to release remaining liquid and discard the swab. Swabs in brain heart infusion (BHI) broth or viral transport media are preferred. Saline may be used if necessary but swabs should not be sent dry (virus is undetectable after 24 hours on a dry swab). For poultry, contact TVMDL before submitting samples.      MG/MS: Moist swabs are preferred; it its recommended to add 1-2 drops of sterile saline to the swab and place in a sterile, leak-proof container (e.g. red top tube). Bacterial culture swabs submitted in bacterial culture media (gel, charcoal, etc.) are not suitable for PCR testing. Fresh samples provide the most accurate results.

Collection Container

BHI broth or viral transport media in a sealed, leak-proof bag or container.
