Detection of glycolic acid, the primary metabolite of ethylene glycol, by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Code1037
SectionAnalytical Chemistry
SpeciesCanine, Feline
Specimen

1 mL serum or urine

Sampling Requirements

Remove serum from red cells and place in an additive free transport tube. If serum or urine is collected after 48 hours from possible exposure to antifreeze, failure to detect glycolic acid in the sample cannot rule out antifreeze intoxication.

Collection Container
  • Serum: plastic or glass tube with no anticoagulant additives.
  • Urine: sealed, leak-proof container.
Packing Instructions

Label all samples. Ship overnight on cold packs.

Special Instructions
