Bone Marrow Fat [Referral]

Description

Measurement of the percent bone marrow fat to assess the nutritional status of an individual animal. Recommended for diagnosis of malnutrition / starvation.

Specimen

Femur bone is preferred. 1 g marrow is required. 

Sampling Requirements

It is preferred to perform this test on animals dead for less than 48 hours. 

A processing charge of 50% of the test cost will be incurred if no bone marrow is found. If possible, please split the bone before shipping to confirm presence of marrow. Seal ends of mid-shaft section to prevent marrow leakage.

Label all samples. Refrigerate and ship overnight.

This test is performed at the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Lansing, MI. Prices listed for tests performed outside TVMDL may not include referral lab accession fees and are subject to change without notice. A processing and forwarding fee is added to all referral tests. Turnaround times vary depending on shipping time and the referral lab’s schedule.
