All TVMDL locations will be closed on Monday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, May 27. Please schedule sample shipments with these hours in mind. As a reminder, the College Station and Canyon labs offer a sample drop off area that is open 24/7/365.
Referral tests are not performed at TVMDL; a processing and shipping fee will apply.
Detection of antibodies to alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1) and ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2), the causative agents of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) using the Immunoperoxidase test (IPT). All antibody positive IPT samples will be tested by the VN to differentiate between AlHV-1 and OvHV-2, resulting in two test charges (IPT and VN).
Detection of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) by real-time PCR. This test can distinguish between the ovine, ibex, white tail deer, caprine and alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 strains of MCF.
Specimen
1 g fresh tissue (lymph node, liver, spleen, kidney, lung) and/or 1-2 mL EDTA whole blood.
Measurement of manganese by inductively-coupled plasma/mass spectrometry. A $11.25 sample preparation fee will be added to tissue and feed specimens.
Specimen
One or more of the following:
0.50 mL EDTA whole blood or heparinized blood
5 g fresh liver
50 mg fresh liver biopsy (at least 3 Tru-Cut samples, no fluid added)
500 g feed
5 mL water
For birds, 0.30 mL EDTA whole blood is adequate.
Blood, serum, and urine samples are tested on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with a turnaround time of 7 days. Tissue and feed samples are tested on Mondays and Thursdays with a turnaround time of 10 days.
Biochemistry profile for groups of 10-15 clinically normal dry heifers or cows. Profile includes calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, albumin, BUN, glucose, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, chloride, non-esterified fatty acids, and NEFA:cholesterol ratio.
Biochemistry profile for groups of 10-15 clinically normal heifers or cows greater than 14 days in milk. Profile includes calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, albumin, BUN, glucose, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, chloride, and beta-hydroxybutyrate.
Biochemistry profile for groups of 10-15 clinically normal transitional heifers or cows. Profile include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, albumin, BUN, glucose, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, chloride, non-esterified fatty acids, NEFA:cholesterol, and beta-hydroxybutyrate.
Measurement of metals and minerals by inductively-coupled plasma/mass spectrometry. Targets include manganese, cobalt, copper, iron, molybdenum, selenium, zinc, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and thallium. A $11.25 sample preparation fee will be added to tissue and feed specimens.
Specimen
One or more of the following*:
both 0.5 mL EDTA whole blood and 1 mL serum (both sample types are required)
For birds, 0.6 mL EDTA or heparinized whole blood is adequate.
*Serum selenium provides current day levels, while whole blood selenium indicates selenium status over a longer period of time. TVMDL can interpret both serum and whole blood selenium concentrations for cattle, horses, sheep, birds or white-tailed deer. For goats, TVMDL has reference values for serum or plasma only.
Blood, serum, and urine samples are tested on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with a turnaround time of 7 days. Tissue and feed samples are tested on Mondays and Thursdays with a turnaround time of 10 days.
