Groch joins College Station laboratory as veterinary pathologist

On September 1, Katia Groch, DVM, PhD, joined the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory’s, TVMDL, College Station laboratory as a veterinary pathologist.

In 2003, Groch earned a bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine, an equivalent to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Following graduation, she spent five years as a veterinary field researcher at the Humpback Whale Institute in Caravelas, Brazil where she performed necropsies of beached marine mammals, provided care and management to live, stranded marine mammals, and coordinated maritime research expeditions.

In 2014, Groch earned a PhD from the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil. There, she researched the anthropogenic interactions and health aspects of humpback whales. In 2019, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship from the University of Sao Paulo with a focus on morbilliviruses in cetaceans.

Groch comes to TVMDL from Texas A&M University where she completed her residency training in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology. She will join a team of nationally renowned pathologists dedicated to serving a variety of animal species.
