Digital parasitology identification service added to TVMDL test catalog

February 4, 2025

The Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) is pleased to announce the implementation of a digital Parasite & Ova Identification test for the identification of microscopic parasitic structures.

Parasite & Ova Identification (Digital)
Test Code: 1566.W
Price: $40
Turnaround Time: This test is performed Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST. If submissions are received during these times, results are typically available within 24 hours. If images are forwarded for consultation, turnaround times may be prolonged.

With digital parasitology, clients can submit microscopic images taken from parasitology tests (e.g., fecal flotation, McMasters). This allows TVMDL’s highly trained microscopists to assist veterinarians and clients in close to real time. Clients are provided with a formal report of the image findings. If a definitive interpretation is not possible with the submitted images, clients are welcome to submit feces for follow-up testing with no additional testing costs.

For guidance on image acquisition, visit the Digital Parasitology Services guidance page on the TVMDL website.

The validation of this test was completed by Julie Piccione, DVM, MS, DACVP (Clinical Pathology) and Mindy Borst, LVT from TVMDL’s clinical pathology section in conjunction with Gui Verocai, DVM, MSc, PhD, DACVM (Parasitology) and Joe Luksovsky, MS at the Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory will also consult on image interpretation, where needed.

For more information about digital parasitology as well as all the diagnostic tests TVMDL has to offer, please visit our website tvmdl.tamu.edu or call the College Station laboratory at 1.888.646.5623.
