Clinical Signs of West Nile Virus and EEEV Clinical signs for both WNV and EEEV are similar and include: Fever Muscle twitching Weakness in legs Depression Diagnosis for each virus cannot be made solely based on clinical signs. Several other equine diseases share similar signs and therefore, diagnostic testing is the only method to determine the cause of illness. What can be done to prevent West Nile virus and...

  3. Heavy rains increase potential for mosquito-borne diseases

...arious parts of the eastern U.S. Although much rarer than West Nile virus, EEEV is similar in that humans are considered a susceptible species, if bitten by an infected mosquito. Transmission WNV and EEE are both reliant on a natural transmission cycle between birds and mosquitos. Birds serve as a reservoir host for the viruses that cause both diseases. Mosquitos that feed on infected birds serve as disease-vectors and transmit the disease to susc...

  4. Equine Encephalomyelitis Viruses (PRNT) [Referral]

Detection of antibodies to Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) and Western equine encephalitis (WEE) viruses using the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). Addition of Venezuelan equine encephalitis is optional. This test is used to assess vaccine titers in horses or to test non-equine species for antibodies to EEE/WEE.

  5. Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus IgM (ELISA) [Referral]

Detection of IgM antibodies to Eastern equine encephalitis virus by IgM-capture ELISA. This test is used to assess recent exposure to EEE virus in clinically ill equines.

TVMDL offers serologic assays to determine whether an animal is infected with EEE, WEE, or WNV. TVMDL also offers a molecular assay (rtPCR) for the detection of WNV. In addition, necropsy and histopathology can assist in the diagnosis of neurologic disease. Heartworm Disease Heartworm disease is caused by a parasi...
