Wang recipient of 2021 Director’s Excellence Award in administrative category

January 10, 2022 by Mallory Pfeifer

Xiaoyan Wang, business intelligence manager, is a 2021 recipient of the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) Director’s Excellence Award in the administrative category.

Since joining TVMDL three years ago, Wang has cemented herself as an invaluable member of the agency’s data analyzation and information technology efforts. For example, at the time of her joining, TVMDL was in the midst of transitioning to a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Wang seamlessly incorporated herself into this project and proved to be instrumental in successfully implementing the new system.

“On its own, this transition presented many data-related challenges, as the database structures of the old and new systems were completely different, requiring many hours of cleanup and mapping before porting anything over,” Serology Section Head and Wang’s nominator Carlos Rodriguez said. “Xiaoyan worked closely with me, our assistant agency director, and various outside contacts to ensure all reporting requirements could be met with the new LIMS and data structure, ensuring minimal to no delay in reporting. This is just one example of her dedication to service, and thanks to Xiaoyan we have continued to meet our reporting obligations despite the many challenges posed by adopting a brand-new LIMS which is still undergoing development and refinement with each new version.”

In addition to Wang’s role in the LIMS transition, she also proved to be an asset this past summer during a large-scale Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing operation at the College Station laboratory. Throughout a 12-week period, TVMDL experienced a historic surge in submissions for CWD testing. The testing operation had several regulatory components, thus accurate, efficient, and quick data analysis was key to providing stakeholders critical information. To assist in these efforts, Wang developed a dashboard that provided a comprehensive and detailed overview of TVMDL’s testing efforts. This data was integral to TVMDL’s testing mission.

During her tenure, Wang has provided quick and thorough assistance throughout the agency both on a regular basis and during times of strenuous testing operations. In addition to her professional abilities, Wang is also noted as being an excellent listener and communicator.

Please join TVMDL in congratulating this year’s Director’s Excellence Award recipients.
