The Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) annually presents the Director’s Excellence Award to individuals who encompass selfless service to the agency. Each year, TVMDL employees nominate peers they believe exemplify TVMDL’s mission. The 2019 winner in the Administrative Category for the Amarillo laboratory is Jay Smith.
Smith has served the Amarillo laboratory as the quality assurance program specialist and safety officer for almost four years. During his tenure, he has developed a reputation of respect, fairness, and dedication amongst his peers.
Daily, Smith is tasked with ensuring laboratory personnel are performing testing in a manner that is efficient, safe, and accurate. In his nomination packet, he is praised for having excellent communications skills that allow him to make necessary changes in procedures to ensure personnel stay compliant with quality assurance and environmental health and safety standards.
Smith is also commended for his patience and ability to teach. He works closely with new employees to ensure their understanding of safety procedures and is known to always be available for questions.
During the course of his career with TVMDL, Smith has developed and implemented an internal communication system aimed as mitigating quality assurance and safety issues. This system has been a valuable tool for the Amarillo laboratory and has led to several successful internal and external safety audits.
“Jay has continuously placed quality assurance and environmental health and safety compliance before our laboratory and it has paid off tremendously,” Amarillo Resident Director Gayman Helman, DVM, PhD, DACVP said. “He is a great asset to TVMDL.”
Please join TVMDL in congratulating Jay Smith and this year’s other Director’s Excellence Award recipients.
