Each year, the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory’s (TVMDL) Director’s Excellence Award is presented to four employees who embody selfless dedication to the agency. TVMDL employees nominate peers they believe exemplify excellence through testing services, quality assurance, technological advances, and overall dedication to TVMDL. The 2018 winner in the Professional Category is Dr. Erin Edwards.
Dr. Edwards is one of the agency’s newest pathologists. In the year and a half she has been at TVMDL, she has worked hard to promote the agency, strengthen partnerships with other laboratories, and diligently serve TVMDL’s clients.
However, her list of contributions doesn’t stop there. In addition to her service to clients, Dr. Edwards was recognized for her outstanding work in strengthening TVMDL’s partnership with the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. In an effort to increase students’ exposure to veterinary diagnostics, over the last year Dr. Edwards has hosted two histopathology seminars, assisted with mock board exams, and sponsored a resident externship.
At the beginning of her tenure at TVMDL, Dr. Edwards quickly and efficiently transitioned into her role, taking on a full case load within two weeks, a task that normally can take up to two months. While contributing to both poultry and mammalian caseloads, she also frequently presents at case rounds, represents TVMDL at national conferences, and assists with student laboratory tours. Despite her short tenure, Dr. Edwards is also very active in the TVMDL monthly pathology meetings, often choosing topics and initiating discussion, and coming prepared with case examples and literature to expand the team’s knowledge base.
Clients praise her detailed and practical case reports. One rancher acknowledged Dr. Edwards for her rapid turnaround and accurate diagnosis on a case that saved him tens of thousands of dollars in losses. In the short amount of time Dr. Edwards has been with TVMDL, she has made a tremendous impact. In her nomination packet, she is described as putting “her heart and soul into the pathology department and TVMDL as a whole.”
TVMDL employs over 150 professionals throughout various veterinary diagnostics roles and capacities. Each employee is dedicated to upholding the mission of protecting animal and human health through diagnostics. Congratulations to all of the 2018 Director’s Excellence Award winners.
