Each year, the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory’s (TVMDL) Director’s Excellence Award is presented to four employees who embody selfless dedication to the agency. TVMDL employees nominate peers they believe exemplify excellence through testing services, quality assurance, technological advances, and overall dedication to TVMDL. The 2018 winner in the Technical Category is Mindy Borst.
Borst is the laboratory supervisor in the College Station clinical pathology section, a position she earned this past September. For the past three years, Borst has been a selfless, dedicated member of the clinical pathology team.
In her nomination packet, Borst is described as passionate and dedicated to selfless service. She is recognized for her skill as a trainer and her technical bench skills. However, it is her work ethic and the success of her endeavors that has earned Mindy recognition for 2018.
When the opportunity to enhance the TVMDL parasitology testing capabilities arose, Borst took the initiative to become the agency’s subject matter expert. In addition to training staff, Borst led efforts in developing standard operating procedures, purchasing supplies, and exploring and implementing contracts with research groups. Thanks to Borst’s efforts, parasitology submissions surpassed the previous year’s submissions by over 24%. In addition to her assistance in enhancing parasitology testing, Borst has presented during case rounds and co-authored two peer-reviewed parasitology manuscripts in industry leading journals.
Borst has been instrumental in helping TVMDL grow its testing capabilities. Her work ethic and enthusiasm for her job are contagious and have left a lasting impact on staff and the agency as a whole. Sarah Eide, assistant section head, notes, “She is compelled to always serve the client with timely and accurate laboratory results. Her enthusiasm for the work we do at TVMDL is infectious not only within our department, but for all TVMDL staff who interact with her.”
TVMDL employs over 150 professionals throughout various veterinary diagnostics roles and capacities. Each employee is dedicated to upholding the mission of protecting animal and human health through diagnostics. Congratulations to all of the 2018 Director’s Excellence Award winners.
