Each year, the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory’s (TVMDL) Director’s Excellence Award is presented to four employees who embody selfless dedication to the agency. TVMDL employees nominate peers they believe exemplify excellence through testing services, quality assurance, technological advances, and overall dedication to TVMDL. The 2018 winner in the Student Category is Kadden Kothmann.
Kothmann is a student assistant in the analytical chemistry section. In his nomination packet, he is described as having made a tremendous impact in the two years he has been with the agency. Kothmann is also described as eager to learn and intentional in every action he takes. Throughout his time at TVMDL, first in the director’s office and now in the analytical chemistry section, Kothmann’s job performance has been described as superb.
He not only performs routine daily responsibilities, but looks for ways to improve processes and performs tasks that are often overlooked, yet essential to his section’s overall functionality. His knowledge of plants and range grasses has been an added benefit to the staff. However, most notable are Kothmann’s efforts in proposing and leading a study to evaluate TVMDL’s extraction process for anticoagulant rodenticides in tissue. Through his efforts, Kothmann discovered a more efficient process for extracting samples, a process that will save considerable personnel time and costs for his section.
He is quick to take every opportunity to learn something new to become a more valuable staff member, and ultimately achieve his goal of becoming a veterinarian. Although Kothmann will eventually leave TVMDL to pursue veterinary medicine, the impact he has made during his tenure is sure to last long past his departure.
TVMDL employs over 150 professionals throughout various veterinary diagnostics roles and capacities. Each employee is dedicated to upholding the mission of protecting animal and human health through diagnostics. Congratulations to all of the 2018 Director’s Excellence Award winners.
