Each year, the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory’s (TVMDL) Director’s Excellence Award is presented to four employees who embody selfless dedication to the agency. TVMDL employees nominate peers they believe exemplify excellence through testing services, quality assurance, technological advances, and overall dedication to TVMDL. The 2018 winner in the Administrative Category is Holley Ernst.
Ernst started her career with TVMDL in 2005 and today serves as the assistant section head for diagnostic services. In her role, Ernst oversees the receipt and assignment of an average of 500 cases per day. In her nomination, Ernst is described as having risen through the TVMDL ranks and flourished as a fair, hardworking, and dynamic leader.
One of her most noteworthy achievements is her ability to embrace new technology and adapt processes to meet changing demands. In 2016, TVMDL transitioned from paper to electronic recordkeeping. Ernst’s team was one of the first to embrace the new system and assisted other sections in adopting the technology. In 2018, as TVMDL began the transition to a new data software program, Ernst was once again ahead of the curve in embracing change and reconfiguring her processes to integrate the new system.
Under Ernst leadership, the diagnostic services team has shown improvement in retention, service, accuracy, teamwork, and completeness of work. Her nomination notes, “…few individuals can have such a profound impact on a diagnostic lab than the leader of a receiving team. This group’s accuracy and timeliness can set up testing sections for success or failure. In the same vein, few positions can have more influence on lab-wide changes. Service-minded, thoughtful, collaborative, and open to change, Holley Ernst is the ideal person to sit in this power seat.”
TVMDL employs over 150 professionals throughout various veterinary diagnostics roles and capacities. Each employee is dedicated to upholding the mission of protecting animal and human health through diagnostics. Congratulations to all of the 2018 Director’s Excellence Award winners.
