Effective immediately, the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) will retire clinical pathology tests specifically targeting white blood cell counts as well as the Giardia/Cryptosporidium (FA) serology test.
In addition to being rarely performed at TVMDL, white blood cell counts do not offer veterinarians significant diagnostic information. As an alternative, TVMDL offers complete blood count (CBC) tests for several different species. For research purposes, a CBC may be modified to only include a white blood cell count through a research agreement.
Additionally, the Giardia/Cryptosporium (FA) test is no longer offered in the Serology section. An alternative to this test is the recently added Giardia/Cryptosporium (qPCR) panel. The qPCR is less subjective, more sensitive, and more specific than the FA.
Test: Giardia/Cryptosporidium (qPCR) Panel
Turnaround: This test is performed in the Molecular Diagnostics section Tuesday through Friday with results in 1 to 4 business days.
