Microscopic examination of fecal samples. Air-dried fecal smear prepared at time of collection is required. The slide is stained in the laboratory and is examined for giardia or trichomonas as well as fungal overgrowth. Fecal cytology is another test that can be ordered and is a cytologic examination by a pathologist to observe for inflammation, bacterial or yeast overgrowth as well as protozoal organisms. See Cytology aspirate/smear.
