Specimen Submission Tips

Detection of antibodies represents a diagnosis of an infection and/or disease which occurred some time ago. In some cases, such as in EIA, leukemia, brucellosis, Chagas, herpesvirus infections, Johne's, etc. it means that the infectious agent coexists with circulating antibodies. Whenever possible, a paired sample (acute and convalescent) is preferred. In herd situations, "pseudo paired" samples may be obtainable, i.e., taking samples from some animals showing acute signs and some from animals convalescing. In case of herd checks, a 5-10% random sample should be collected.

We urge you to inform the lab as early as possible in case of export testing. Because of the biological nature of these tests, they sometimes don't work for various reasons and they have to be retested. Please always allow ample time for retesting or possible resubmission of sample.

Call lab as soon as possible (2-4 weeks) if you plan to submit 100 or more samples (a 20% Stat surcharge may have to be added if TVMDL has less than 8 working days on large export testing volumes).
