The College Station and Amarillo laboratories accept carcasses after hours Monday through Sunday. Necropsies will have results reported in 1-4 days; results are typically available the next day, but weekends and holidays may cause a delay of no more than four days. Carcasses received Sunday will be necropsied on Monday.
After Hours Charge in Addition to Necropsy Charge
In-state clients: $75
A carcass with little or no decomposition is obviously one of the best diagnostic specimens. Carcasses intended for necropsy should be kept refrigerated, but not frozen, as freeze/thaw artifacts obscure gross and microscopic lesions. Do not drop entire small carcasses such as birds or rodents into formalin, since internal organs do not get fixed properly by this procedure. A regular necropsy fee will be charged if TVMDL has to perform a necropsy on a fixed carcass.
Contact the Lab
If you require after hours necropsy assistance, contact the laboratory where you will drop the carcass. If possible, call to arrange the drop off time during regular business hours. Note the after hours number and contact the on-call professional when you arrive.
