Previously, all parasitology samples were referred to Dr. Craig, in his previous capacity with the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVM), for analysis. Now, TVMDL has the unique opportunity to take advantage of Dr. Craig’s expertise as the agency develops their own parasitology section.
“Dr. Craig will be a huge asset as he trains technical and professional staff within TVMDL and provides consultations and testing services for TVMDL clients,” Julie Piccione, DVM, MS, DACVP, Clinical Pathology Section Head said.
Dr. Craig spent 42 years at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, where he focused on parasitology. He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 1961 and his research doctorate in Veterinary Medical Science from Texas A&M University in 1975.
“Dr. Craig brings a wealth of knowledge to TVMDL,” Bruce L. Akey, DVM, MS, TVMDL Director said. “His parasitology experience and expertise will be a valuable resource for TVMDL and a great benefit to our clients.”
During his time at CVM, Dr. Craig began to see more cases of parasite resistance to anthelminthics and thus, a re-emergence of some parasites. Dr. Craig is available for phone consultation to discuss these and other parasite cases.
With the addition of Dr. Craig, TVMDL will now offer the following tests:
Quantitative egg counts (McMaster’s and Wisconsin)
- Fecal flotation
- Fecal sedimentation
- Fecal cytology
- Parasite identification
- Baermann test
Additional parasitology testing services may also be accessed through TVMDL as referrals to other laboratories.
Please join TVMDL in welcoming Dr. Craig to the agency. For more information on TVMDL’s parasitology services or to schedule a phone consultation with Dr. Craig, please call the College Station location at 979.845.3414 or visit tvmdl.tamu.edu.
