Mr. Carlos Rodriguez, Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory serology laboratory supervisor, was recently awarded the 2016 Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence in the Technical and Programmatic Staff category.
Carlos began working at TVMDL as a technician I in the Serology Section shortly after graduating from Texas A&M University in 2012. Through hard work and dedication, Carlos was quickly promoted to technician II and last year was promoted to serology laboratory supervisor.
As laboratory supervisor, Carlos is responsible for supervision and support of eight full-time technicians, while directly overseeing one of the busiest parts of TVMDL. The Serology Section performs over 175 different tests and generates about 300 results a day.
“Carlos makes it easy to do my job,” said Serology Section Head Sandy Rodgers. “He works hard every day to exceed expectations. Carlos never backs away from a challenge and is consistently willing to take on additional responsibilities.”
His ability to interact with people has helped TVMDL make an impact at a global level. Between 2012 and 2014, Carlos was chosen several times to provide hands-on training in various serologic techniques to visiting scientists from around the world. In that time, Carlos helped train diagnosticians from Egypt, Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Indonesia.
Within TVMDL, Carlos is known as both a problem solver and a forward-thinker. He enjoys implementing new technologies and testing capabilities. Outside of his primary duties, he serves in a support role for TVMDL’s laboratory information management system (LIMS). During a recent software upgrade, Carlos was instrumental in beta testing the upgrade before the release, ensuring existing workflows were preserved, issues were identified, and provided feedback to the software vendor. The upgrade was the smoothest one since TVMDL installed the system.
TVMDL Director Bruce L. Akey, DVM, MS, knows that employees like Carlos have a profound impact on our agency as a whole.
“In every organization, there are “go-to” people who agency leaders can trust for advice, fresh ideas, and leadership. For TVMDL, Carlos is certainly on that list. He’s well versed in the science of his position and also excels in leading people and processes. That’s an unusual combination, but one that serves Carlos well, and has helped TVMDL envision improvements in their processes that will benefit both our employees and our clients. His drive, capability and commitment are unmatched in our technical ranks.”
The Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence recognizes individuals for current and sustained productivity over time. It honors outstanding achievements by personnel of Texas A&M AgriLife, which includes TVMDL.
